Gayle Aloma Barber Cousart

December 18, 1942 - January 3, 2025

Gayle Aloma Barber Cousart, 82, passed away on January 3, 2025 at SOVAH Health Hospital in Danville, VA. Aloma was born on December 18, 1942 in Danville, VA to the late Mamie Pruitt Barber and the late Sterley A. Barber. She was also predeceased by her loving husband of many years, Mr. John Cousart.

Aloma was of the Baptist Faith and attended College Park Baptist Church. She was of a past member of the Danville Chamber of Commerce and was owner of Jackson Hewitt tax service in Danville Virginia for 25 years. She was an avid bowler for over 30 years, bowling in numerous leagues and tournaments. She also enjoyed playing softball, and loved the NFL, especially the Kansas City Chiefs. She had a special talent for making wreaths, and did so for many years. She also loved going to the beach whenever she could, especially Myrtle Beach, SC.

Aloma is survived by two daughters; Julie Coates (James Adams) and Lisa Elgin; one sister; Sybil B. Smith; one brother; Joel Barber; six grandchildren; Brittany Elgin Hallman (Mark), Lauren Elgin Reynolds (Jeromy), Megan Elgin Pitts (Winston), Thomas Ray Coates (Brittney), Travis Aaron Coates (Cyndi), and Nicole Lynn Coates (Jeremy Sheltra); and eight great grandchildren; Mark, Noah, Wyatt, Jacie, Tenley, Kinley, Lily, and Ellie.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Aloma was predeceased by a sister; Peggie B. Nester; three brothers; Sterling Ford Barber, Roger Arey Barber, and Frederick “Freddie” A. Barber; and two special dear friends; Judy Powell and Brenda Oakes.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the loving and caring staff at Roman Eagle Nursing Home, Danville, VA during Aloma’s stay there.

A Funeral Service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 11:00am at Norris West End Chapel, Danville, VA. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held on the same day just prior to the service from 10-11:00am, also at Norris West End Chapel, Danville, VA. At other times, the family will be receiving friends at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Lisa Elgin at 118 Meadowbrook Circle, Danville, VA.
