Joan Dorothy Powell
On February 3, 2025, Joan D. (Booth, Gordineer) Powell was called home by her Lord and Savior. Joan was born July 9, 1933, to Edwin and Myrtle Booth in a small house on Maple Ave, Cortlandt Manor, New York. She spent her younger years helping to care for her many younger siblings. Joan was schooled in the Peekskill, NY school systems. She did not finish high school but worked extremely hard to receive her GED in the early 1980s. Right after that she continued her studies to receive her nurse’s degree to become an LPN. Accomplishments to be admired.
Joan was employed by Kettinger’s Dept. Store in Peekskill, NY. One of her first jobs was to decorate the large store front windows. She was 17 years old at the time. That is where she met her first husband, Raymond J. Gordineer, Sr. Their marriage produced three surviving children, Linda, Raymond Jr., and Nancy. Joan and Raymond lived in Peekskill, NY for a time, then moved to Waterbury, CT., where Linda was born. They returned to Peekskill, where for many years they resided on Main Street, until the passing of Raymond in 1978. Joan married Carl G. Powell in 1979 and moved to Putnam Valley, NY and lived there for 22 years. They then relocated to Amherst, VA. After Carl’s passing in June 2019, Joan moved to Runk and Pratt, Lynchburg VA. The last year living at Pearls of Life Memory Care Center.
In addition to Kittinger’s Dept Store, Joan worked as a nurse’s aide for many years at Cortlandt Nursing Home, Cortlandt Manor NY. After receiving her nurse’s license, she continued working at Cortlandt Nursing Home as an LPN and Meds. Nurse. Joan worked mostly nights. She also worked at Peekskill Hospital for a time. She also provided Home Health Care support to many relatives and friends. Joan taught aerobics at Coolwell Senior Center in VA.
Throughout Joan’s life, she professed her strong faith in the Lord. Having accepted Him into her life as a very young girl. Her life is an example of that action. When Joan was a member of The Yorktown Alliance Church, Yorktown Hgts., NY she was a Sunday School teacher and VBS leader. She was also Sunday School Superintendent for many years. When she moved to Amherst, VA, she became a member of Forest Alliance Church and was very involved in many church activities.
Joan gave a lot of herself. She would not hesitate to help someone in need. Always trying to figure out a way to do that. She also volunteered with a couple animal rescue groups while living in NY. Her long life is an example of giving and helping others, often sacrificing things to make life better for others. To honor Joan’s memory, please do a kind act for someone you know or do not know, and please remember Joan as you do…
She is survived by her son, Ray Gordineer and wife Terri Jennings; daughters, Linda Dzyndra and husband Borys and Nancy Tompkins and husband Brion; grandchildren, Jason King and wife Jennifer, Tiffany King and husband Sylvain Milot, and Nadia DeMuth and husband Jeremiah; great grandchildren, Avery Corrigan, Griffin Corrigan, Skylar King and Isabel Milot; sisters: Barbara (Kenneth) Carpenter of Ballston Spa, NY, Margaret (James) Tooley of Bainbridge, NY and Florence (John) Rich of Verplanck, NY, and sisters-in-law: Florence (Edwin) Booth of NY and Margie (Marshall) Zinnamosca and many, many nieces and nephews.
