Clarice Garvin Gilley
Clarice Garvin Gilley, 88, of Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 9, 1936, to the late James Raleigh Belle and Glenna Belle, Garvin lived a life of deep faith, devotion, and love.
Garvin was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jonnie Hughes Gilley, and her sister, Sandra Kendrick.
A strong and devout Christian, Garvin served in many roles within her church, where her compassion and leadership touched countless lives. Her love for music and gift at the piano filled many hearts with joy, and her presence lit up every room she entered. She never hesitated to share her love for Jesus with anyone she met. She served as an elder at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, while always holding a special connection to her home church, Salem Church of Patrick Springs, Virginia. Garvin had a gentle spirit and a nurturing heart. She loved tending to her flower garden, collecting crosses, and doting on her beloved cat, Chowder. Above all, she cherished her family and loved them with all of her heart. After graduating from high school, she went on to complete two years of college. Garvin worked many years as a devoted employee for Dupont and as a manager for JC Penney; she retired from both and left a legacy of hard work and dedication. She was deeply cherished by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by her sons, Johnnie Lee Gilley (Terry) and Stacy Glenn Gilley (Terina); sisters, Dana Livengood (C.W.), Joan Montgomery; grandchildren, Joseph Gilley, Brittany Gilley-Varipapa (Nicholas), Emaleigh Singletary (Daniel), Johnnie Ian Gilley; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Gilley and Asa Singletary; very special friend James Nester; several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Garvin’s warmth, strength, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Salem Church, 159 Salem Church Road, Patrick Springs, Virginia, or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of Garvin’s memory.
