Jimmy Carroll Barker

March 3, 1946 - July 22, 2025

3/3/46-7/22/25

Jimmy Carroll Barker passed away peacefully at the Salem VA Hospital under Hospice Care after suffering a stroke.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Obie James and Gladys Jones Barker and two brothers, Jerry and Larry Barker.

Survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Louise Freeman Barker; two sisters, Judy Eanes (Wayne) and Linda Reed (Noel); and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jimmy was born 3/3/46 and grew up in Axton, VA. He attended Drewry Mason High School and just a few short years after, he married the love of his life, Louise Freeman, on 11/17/1967. He was drafted by the Army shortly thereafter in February of 1968. He served the Army as Private First Class during the Vietnam War.

After his service, for a time, Jimmy worked at Panel Knitting, but his passion was the Automotive and Tire industry and that's where he enjoyed working and would eventually retire from GR Chevrolet, where he was a mechanic.

Jimmy and Louise loved the church. They most recently attended Axton Baptist Church and have been members for about 20 years. Jimmy served there as a Deacon. He loved his church and church family, and they were always eager to help the church with cleaning, mowing, communion and anything needed to be of service.

His service did not end with the church. He volunteered at the Axton Fire Department for nearly 25 years. And was also a proud member of the men's organization, Carpenters for Christ.

Jimmy was a kind and generous man. He was always there for anyone in need. He was a true and faithful friend. He loved his Chevrolets and Cadillacs and also had one of the best-looking yards in the neighborhood!

He loved the Lord and would want to share the gospel message of Jesus Christ with his fellow man so all could know that Jesus is Savior and that you too can receive His precious gift of salvation.

Funeral services for Mr. Barker will be conducted on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services - West End Chapel with Pastor Chris Robertson officiating. Visitation will be conducted one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
