Betty Wood Woody

May 21, 1929 – July 30, 2025

Betty Wood Woody transitioned to her eternal home on July 30, 2025, at the age of 96. She was born on May 21, 1929, to the late William Addison Wood and Flora Bell Henderson Wood.

Betty was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her journey on earth was one filled with love, compassion, and an unwavering faith in God. She was a member of Fairview Christian Church and even when she stopped being able to physically go to church, you could find her listening to stories of the Bible on tape.

Betty dropped out of school in the fifth grade to go to work and help provide for her family. She worked at F.W. Woolworth and Jobbers Blue Buckle Overall Company. But her most notable career was being a homemaker and helping care for her family. She was married to the late George Harris Woody for 56 years. Despite not having any biological children, she was proud to call her niece, Karen “Kay” Marshall Gravely, her daughter and she always let everyone know that Kay took the best care of her.

She was the last living member of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her three sisters, Margaret Wood Duff, Dorothy “Dot” Hartless, and Geraldine Frances Wood, and her four brothers, Thomas William Wood, Raymond Gray Wood, Leroy Odell Wood, and William “Billy” Edward Wood. She is survived by her niece, Karen “Kay” Marshall Gravely of Madison Heights, Va, her great-niece, Emily Moore (Trey) of Richmond, Va, her great-nephew, Phillip Marshall (Andria) of Tampa, Fl, and the son she never had, Ronald “Ron” Moore (Susan), of Lynchburg, VA, who was always willing to help her out at the cost of a strawberry pie. Additionally, she is survived by many other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and family members whom she loved dearly. She was especially blessed to have special family members and loved ones who helped care for her throughout her later life: Carol Luther, Tina Jefferson, Madison “Maddie” Holmes, Pat Hawkins, and Linda “Scottie” Scott.

Her hobbies included shopping and collecting antiques – there were two things she could never buy enough of: purses (or pocketbooks, as she called them) and teapots. And you would never find her without her stash of white powdered donuts and chocolate candy. When her sister, Dot, and husband, Woody, were still alive, she always looked forward to her annual Myrtle Beach trip with the family where she would get her favorite banana split and buy new outfits at Hamrick’s. Prior to her passing, she was grateful to take one last trip to Florida to see her great-great nephew, Jeremiah, and great-great niece, Sami Grace.

We would like to thank the staff at Centra Bedford Hospice House and the nurses who cared so graciously for our Nanny during these last difficult months.

The family will have a graveside service at Spring Hill Cemetery at a date to be determined, with Pastor Christopher Carter officiating.

We love you Nanny, and we know you are always with us in spirit as our guardian angel.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make donations to the Centra Bedford Hospice House and support the work of Friends of Bedford Hospice House that help provide for compassionate end of life care.
