Homer "Gene" Eugene Martin

August 2, 1945 - August 6, 2025

Homer Eugene “Gene” Martin, 80, of Bassett, Virginia, transitioned from this earthly life Wednesday, August 6, 2025. He was born in Pensacola, Florida, on August 2, 1945, to the late Homer Talmadge Martin and Mary Bell Spencer Martin.

Gene proudly served his country in the Army National Guard for four years. He was employed as a mechanic at Dupont from where he retired after 30 years. Whether working or enjoying nature, he loved being outdoors. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and four-wheelers, riding jet skis on the lake, fishing, and swimming. He often spent time with his friends simply enjoying a cup of coffee at McDonald’s. One of his favorite pastimes was visiting Sam’s Club and going out to eat in Roanoke each weekend; but his greatest joy was found in spending time with his daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Angela Smith (Kevin); brother, William Joseph Martin (Joyce); grandchildren, Christopher Martin, Siearra Davis, Kevon Smith; seven great-grandchildren; special caregiver, Bianca Hairston; and a host of extended family and friends. Also left to cherish his memory is his dear friend, Marilyn Stewart, with whom he shared over two decades of joy, happiness, and love.

The family will accept visitors Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM at the home of Angela Smith located at 562 Richardson Road, Collinsville, Virginia. Although there will be no services held, the family wishes to extend their gratitude for the many acts of kindness and the outpouring of love during this time of grief.

Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at www.wrightfuneralservices.net.
