Ray Goens
Douglas Ray Goens, Jr., known affectionately as Ray to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, in his hometown of Salem, Va, where he was also born on April 30, 1963. Ray's life was a testament to his friendly nature, analytical mind, and handy skills, which he generously shared with everyone he knew.
Ray was preceded in death by his loving parents, Doug and Norma Goens; his sister, Elaine Mitchell; and his brother-in-law, Glenn Craig. His legacy of kindness and mentorship lives on through his beloved wife and best friend of 22 years, Peggy Goens, who was the center of his world. He is also survived by his brother, Tony Goens and his wife, Melinda; sisters-in-law Carolyn Edelstein and her husband, Gene, Glenda Matthews and her husband, Mark, and Marlene Craig; as well as his cherished father and mother-in-law, George and JoAnne Craig. A special mention must be made of his cousin Cindy Wellons, who played the pivotal role of matchmaker for Ray and Peggy. Ray's extended family includes numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he adored and cherished.
Professionally, Ray was an awesome engine rebuilder, a talent that earned him respect and admiration in the automotive community. His work was not just a job but a passion, and his expertise was sought after by many. Ray was a proud member of the Northview United Methodist Church, where he formed lasting friendships and contributed to the community.
Ray's interests were a reflection of his character. He had the privilege of being mentored by Lynwood Daughtry, a relationship that greatly influenced his life. In turn, Ray became a great mentor to many over the years, sharing his vast knowledge and love for cars. His guidance and wisdom will be missed by all who had the pleasure of learning from him.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Angels of Assisi in Roanoke.
