Charles Jesse Tanner

Charles Jesse Tanner, age 81 of Chatham, Virginia, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, at his residence. He was born July 22, 1944, in Lynchburg, Virginia to the late Agnes Mae Vicars and the late Jesse Davis Tanner. He was married to the late Shannon Volpe Tanner, who predeceased him on July 16, 2018 after over 50 years of marriage.

Mr. Tanner loved to fish, he enjoyed softball and bowling, and he continued his education at DCC after the closing of Dan River Mills. As he grew older, he would enjoy just being outside. He was a devoted member of State Line Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Hilda Tanner of Chatham; sister, Vicki Ann Tanner; brother, Edmund Davis Tanner (Mary); his grandchildren, Joshua Nance, Brandon Simmons, Faith Simmons, Emily Richardson; as well as his great-grandchildren, Roland Nance, Paisley Freeland, and Bryan Chimino, Jr.

In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Mr. Tanner was also predeceased by his grandson, Patrick Charles Richardson.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Norris Funeral Service, Chatham Chapel with Pastor Bob Thurman officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.
