Elaine Cummins Johnson
Mary Elaine Cummins Johnson, 97, of Rustburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
Born on September 14, 1928, in Eaton, Ohio. Elaine was the daughter of the late Frank W. Cummins and Madge Druley Cummins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, M. Lyman Johnson; her sister, Joan Basham; and her brother, Earl Cummins.
Elaine was a 1946 graduate of Fountain City High School in Fountain City, Indiana. After graduation, she began her career with Nationwide Insurance, which brought her to Lynchburg, where she would make her lifelong home. She later retired from Simpson Johnson, Inc., and enjoyed working for several years at Hickory Farms in the mall.
A woman of compassion and service, Elaine gave generously of her time, volunteering for many years at Lynchburg General Hospital. Her faith was central to her life. She was a devoted charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, where she served faithfully as treasurer an elder, and choir member.
Elaine loved her family above all else. She found great joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her warm and nurturing spirit made her a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend. She also had a deep love for gardening and travel—cherishing both family vacations and solo bus trips, always eager for new experiences.
Elaine is survived by her four children: Stephanie J. Litchford (Jimmy), Walter L. Johnson, Richard L. Johnson (Lori), and Gregory M. Johnson (Caroline); her grandchildren: Whitney Kramer (Jeb), Ryan Litchford (Missy), Tyler Litchford (Laura), Alex Hathaway, and Marlon Johnson; and seven great-grandchildren: Blake Kramer (Sara), Aaron Kramer (Allie), Grace Kramer, Daegan Litchford, Taylor Litchford, Rylee Litchford, and Olivia Litchford. She is also survived by her sister, Nell Cheek, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.
A service to celebrate Elaine’s life will be announced at a later date.
