Rodney Lee Smith
Rodney Lee Smith, age 63, of Monroe, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Rodney was born in Cecil County, Maryland. He was the son of the late William Howard Smith and Lorene Snipps Rickman. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Carl Biggs, and three sisters: Bernice Smith, Janet Strong, and Diane Romo.
He is survived by his longtime partner, Bessie Leftwich, who stood by his side through thick and thin. He also leaves behind five loving siblings: Lill Stacy, Marie Lester (and her husband Roger), William Smith, Jr. (and his wife Ashley), Wanda Mayo, and Harry Smith (and his wife Rhonda). He will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, other family members, and close friends.
Rodney had two loyal dogs, Roscoe and Little Man, who were his constant companions and best buddies.
To his friends, Rodney was known as “Space Cowboy,” a nickname from his C.B. radio days that stuck with him over the years. He had a big heart and a creative spirit. One of his favorite hobbies was building model cars—especially Chevrolets. He’d work on a Ford now and then, but Chevy was his top pick. Rodney also enjoyed playing pool and spending time outdoors fishing.
His life will be celebrated with a gathering of family and friends on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
In memory of Rodney and his love for animals, the family asks that donations be made to the Amherst County Animal Shelter.
Rodney will be deeply missed, but the memories he gave us will live on forever.
