Richard Dean Stump
Richard Dean Stump, 81, of Rustburg, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from injuries sustained in an accident. He was the loving husband of the late Barbara Withers Hefley Stump.
Born in Canton, Ohio, on December 6, 1943, he was the son of the late Dillon and Ethel Stump. Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy, retiring after a distinguished and dedicated career. Following his military service, he worked as a master electrician and was well known for his skill with his hands—always ready to lend his time and talents to help family and friends with any project. He was also the former owner and operator of Tanglewood Mobile Home Park.
Richard's faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and also attended All Nations Church. Actively involved in his church communities, he had a passion for sharing his faith and lived his life as a witness to others. A man of strong conservative values, he enjoyed keeping up with current events and political discussions. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Williams; his grandson, Stephen Hefley; and his great-grandchild, Angelina Hefley.
Left to cherish his memory are his eight children, Christine Stump McGurer (George) and Lisa Stump, Richard Hefley (Susan), Paul E. Hefley (Anielle), Dena G. Hefley (Gene), Sandra J. Travis (Brian), John S. Hefley (Joan), and Joy H. Alexander (Rick); as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and cherished friends.
A service celebrating Richard’s life and faith will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Thomas Road Baptist Church, with Pastor Rick Rasberry and Pastor Nigel Alleyne officiating. Interment will follow at Tree of Life Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
