Clarence "Chip" Edward Smoot

September 21, 1950 - October 9, 2025

Clarence Edward “Chip” Smoot, Jr., age 75, of Lynchburg, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

Chip was born and raised in Lynchburg, the son of the late Clarence E. Smoot and Mary Burchette Smoot.

He spent many years working as an over-the-road truck driver, but he always had a special love for flying. He earned his private pilot’s license and enjoyed spending time at New London Airport.

Chip also had a deep commitment to his community. He proudly served with the Lynchburg Life Saving Crew for many years, holding leadership roles and helping people in times of need. He even competed in heavy rescue competitions with the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, always striving to improve his skills and support his team.

While Chip was proud of his work and service, his family meant the world to him. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved spending time with those he cared about most.

Chip was preceded in death by his parents and his two sons, Clarence Edward “Eddie” Smoot, III, and Carlton Stratton “Peanut” Smoot.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Cash (Randy); his grandchildren, Junior, Brittanie, Catherine, Chance, Will, and Dixie; and his great-grandchildren, Braxton, Isaac, Nova Lynn, and Hudson. He also leaves behind two sisters, Patricia Falk and Teresa “Robin” Smoot; his brother, Barry Michael Smoot (Joan); nieces Brooke Falk and Bridgett Smoot; nephew Barry Michael Smoot, Jr. (Cheryle); and Susan Short, the mother of his children and his caregiver in later years.

Chip’s life was one of service, love, and dedication—to his family, his community, and his passions. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.-
