James Elward Cartier
James Elward Cartier, age 76, of Axton, Virginia, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loved ones on November 11, 2025, at Moses Cone Hospital. He was born on February 15, 1949, to the late Elmore Carter and Dorothy Martin Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William R. Carter.
James worked for many years as Head Maintenance Supervisor for the City of Martinsville’s Public Works Department before becoming disabled. Earlier in life, he held numerous positions throughout his career, including musician, electrician, and small business owner.
On Sundays, you could always find James at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, dressed in an outfit that perfectly complemented his beloved wife of nearly 47 years, Marilyn. Their love story began as pen pals, writing to one another for two years and speaking weekly on the phone before finally meeting in person. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two children: daughter Jaimie Wells (Joseph) of Greensboro, NC, and son, Emmanuel Cartier of Los Angeles, CA. He also leaves behind his bonus granddaughter, McKenna Wells of Greensboro, NC, as well as his “grandchildren with fur” — Skittles, Loki, and Leo.
James deeply loved his family and always looked forward to any occasion that brought everyone together — especially if it involved “day-sert.” Known for his notorious sweet tooth, which he proudly passed on to his children, he found his greatest joy in the company of those he loved. Nothing made him happier than having his wife and all his children together, both by blood and by marriage. He especially delighted in laughing with Jaimie, taking rides with Manny, and teaming up with Joseph — moments that truly captured the joy and connection he valued most.
Those who followed James on social media knew how proud he was of his garden — especially his banana plants, which earned him and Marilyn a feature in the Martinsville Bulletin. James never met a stranger and was known to invite new acquaintances to gatherings or family events. His genuine curiosity about people led his family to lovingly tease him about being “nosy,” but it was truly a reflection of his caring and friendly nature.
James will always be remembered for his infectious smile, unwavering faith, and lifelong dedication to helping others. He was equally known for his freely given advice — often unsolicited, but always sincere and offered with the best of intentions.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his sister, Karen Carter of Martinsville, VA; brothers Charles Carter of Long Island, NY, Johnny Carter of Axton, VA, and Kenneth Carter of Danville, VA; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He also shared a special bond with his cousin, Lemon Carter Jr., who was always more like a brother than a cousin.
Visitation will be held on 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Norris Funeral Services with Pastor David Deisher officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mountain View Cemetery, in Ridgeway, VA.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, visits, calls, and all other expressions of kindness and concern shown during this difficult time.
