Marie Tolbert Booker
Ms. Donna Marie Tolbert Booker, 78, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the SECU Hospice Care Center in Yadkinville surrounded by her adoring family. Marie was born in Mount Airy on August 28, 1947, to the late Roy Tolbert and Ada Flippen Tolbert. She was a former co-owner of Guys and Dolls Salon, where she faithfully worked for most of her adult life, helping her clients look and feel their best. She was a member of Hope Church and dedicated her life to following Jesus. Marie had a joyful spirit and a love for life’s simple pleasures. She was an enthusiastic Duke basketball fan and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family, especially her beloved brothers, sisters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a talented cook, as taught by Nana, known for her skill in the kitchen and the many hours she spent canning with love and care. She is survived by her son, Sam Holder, Jr. and his wife, Susan; her step-daughter, Annette Booker Wight; grandchildren, Samuel Bracky Holder, Laken Booker (Timothy Sawyers), and Hope Bowman (Mason); many loving great-grandchildren; siblings, Carl Tolbert (Linda), Penny Fritz (Joe), and Louise Dunbar (Stoney); brother-in-law, Bill Hawks; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her sisters, Nina “Una” Hawks and Ruby “Auntie” Houlden; and brother-in-law, Tom Houlden. A funeral service to celebrate Marie’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 11:30 in the morning at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Dr. Craig Edwards will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marie’s honor to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, Post Office Box 325, Dobson, North Carolina, 27017.
