Avis Hodges Gilley

Avis Hodges Gilley, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. She was born to the late Fitz Lee Hodges and Effie Hale Hodges. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earnest Garland Gilley; and by her brothers, William Eldridge Hodges, Herman Edward “Hunky” Hodges, Lonnie Lee Hodges and Gary Wayne Hodges; and her sister, Aileen Hodges Arden

Avis was of the Christian Faith. She was well known for her strong work ethic, having worked many years as an upholsterer, with Bassett Chair Company. She took pride in her work and her dedication to providing for her family.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Ronald Stephen Harrell, Michael Dean “Perk” Harrell, and Brian Keith Gilley; her daughter, Rhonda Jo Gilley-Ray; her sister, Marie Stone; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will dearly miss her.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 1:00pm at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Tim Wood, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow after the service at Roselawn Burial Park.
