Shirley Hurt McCormick

February 18, 1938 - December 16, 2025

Shirley Jane Hurt McCormick, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born on February 18, 1938, and was the daughter of the late Lucian Thomas Hurt and Blanche Brooks Hurt.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willard "Pete" Allen McCormick; her daughter, Janice May McCormick; her sisters, Juanita Leebrick, Joyce Voyles, and Della Overstreet; and her brothers, Lucian Thomas Hurt, Jr., Jonnie L. Hurt, and David “Elmo” Hurt.

She is survived by two daughters, Janet Harless (Jimmie) and Linda Johnson; two grandchildren, Darryl Moreland, Jr. and Randy Lee Johnson; a special niece whom she considered as her own, Alice Stump; and a number of other loving nieces and nephews.

Shirley enjoyed spending her time watching wrestling, both on television and at live events at the armory, where she faithfully supported the Mid-Atlantic and WCW wrestling leagues. She loved her entire family dearly, but shared an especially close bond with her sister, Juanita. The two were often seen wearing matching outfits and even shared a room together during their years in the nursing home. Shirley was a woman of strong moral values and instilled those same principles in everyone who spent time with her. She was a pure and modest lady, and to know her was truly to love her.

A graveside service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with Pastor Rick Rasberry officiating.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions in Shirley’s name are asked to consider St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Shirley’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
