George Nelson
George Albert Nelson, Jr., born on November 21, 1945, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. In his final moments, he received a heartfelt blessing and prayer—a comfort rooted in his Methodist faith, which guided him throughout his life. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, George’s life was marked by loyalty, humor, and a steady kindness that touched everyone who knew him.
George shared 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Peggy Jo Nelson, a partnership built on love, laughter, and unwavering dedication. He was a proud and loving father to Carman Beth Strickland (William), George Jay Nelson (Felicia), Debbie Layne Dolin, Jeff Kay Tinsley, Jr. (Meg), and Chris Matthew Tinsley (Jenny). He was preceded in death by his daughter Michele Denise Blake, whom he now joins in peaceful rest.
In addition to his wife and children, George leaves behind grandchildren Amanda Daugherty, Stephen Fowler, Heather Fowler, Christopher Tinsley, Kaleigh Bess, Jacob Nelson, Jordan “Honey” Nelson, Justin Nelson, Briana Tainer, Olivia Miller, and Dylan Carlton; and great-grandchildren Nathan Daugherty, Tristen Daugherty, Seraphine Fowler, Harper Fowler, Sadie Bess, Jacob Nelson, Cole Nelson, Everlee Simmons, Ellie Williamson, and Weston Carlton.
He is also survived by sisters-in-law Betty Layton (Mike), Donna Talifero, Roxanne Unroe, Paulette Terry, and brother-in-law Roger “Pete” Terry.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George A. Nelson, Sr. and Dorothy Lane Nelson, and his sisters Vivian Sutphin and Janet Batten.
He worked 30 dedicated years at Hercules, known for his dependability, hard work, and the humor he brought everywhere.
A lifelong baseball lover, he was the first person to hit a home run out of Linden Park, and he also played on the Clifton Forge team in the Little League World Series. Enthusiastic Miami Dolphins fan and devoted outdoorsman, George had a true passion and love for hunting and fishing. He cherished every moment spent outdoors—whether casting a line, reeling in a bass, or sharing stories while hunting—and he shared this love with family and friends, teaching patience, skill, and the joy of nature. His famous dad jokes—always delivered with perfect timing—brought laughter to countless moments and will be remembered with fond smiles.
George was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to share in his life and laughter.
A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Brandon Nicely officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge. There will be no formal visitation. However, friends may call during business hours at Nicely Funeral Home.
