Dianne Bowers Smith
Dianne Bowers Smith, lovingly known by many as “Mom Mom”, age 80, of Covington, passed peacefully at her home and went to Heaven on January 30, 2026.
Born and raised in Covington, Dianne was the daughter of the late James “Jack” Bowers and Frances Fridley Bowers. She was a graduate of Boiling Spring High School and completed post-graduate studies at Alleghany County High School. Covington was always home to her, and she deeply loved her community and the people in it.
Dianne shared 35 years of her life with her devoted husband, Thomas “Tom” Smith, and together they built a home grounded in faith, family, and service. Family was the heart of everything she did.
She is survived by her children: Susan Scott Crowder (Jay), Jennifer Scott Cales (Timmy), Beth Smith Tucker, Bingo Smith (Darlene), Ajay Smith (Tonya), and Sharon Spraker (Tim). She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Beverly Ann Scott.
She was a proud and loving grandmother to Josh Tolley (Shauna), Sara Tolley (Adrian), Suzanne O’Conner (Brandon), Megan Fitch (Chris), Triston Cales (Ashley), Lucas Cales, Matt Wells (Amber), Nick Tucker (Hannah), Alli Tucker, Jennifer Kegley (Michael), Bryce Smih (Caitlin), Kacelynn Smith, Felicia Gregg (James), Samantha Byer, and Chris Spraker (Allyson). Her joyed multiplied again through her great-grandchildren: Carter Tolley, Genevieve Tolley, and Evangeline Tolley; Brody O’Conner and Jayce O’Conner; Peyton Cales and Levi Cales; Bailee Richardson; Rhett Smith; Landon Wells, Payton Wells, and Harper Wells; Braylen McFarland; Jayden Gregg and Jace Gregg; Camden Byer; Bryson Burton, Brody Spraker, and Benny Spraker. She was preceded in death by her precious great-granddaughter, Paislee O’Conner.
Dianne is also survived by her siblings: Morris Bowers (Wilma), Lou Wise, Dobie Bowers (Becky), Jerry Bowers, Wanda Martin, Gary Bowers, Debbie Johns (Joey), Donna Nelson (Curtis), David Bowers, and Cindy Simpson (Bryan); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dianne spent her life caring for others. She served as cafeteria manager at Edgemont Elementary School and Covington High School, worked at Whitey’s One Stop Market, babysat countless children, and provide compassionate care for seniors. She truly never met a child she did not love.
A devoted Christian, Dianne lived her life for Jesus and was kind to all. She was an active member and custodian of First Christian Church where she also taught Sunday School for young children. She volunteered faithfully with the church, the Covington Fire and Rescue Ladies Auxillary.
She found joy in the simple blessings of life – spending time with family and friends, sewing, ceramics, painting, crafting, gardening, cooking shopping, walking, sitting with Tom and family sharing a quiet meal, and watching wildlife in their field.
