William Michael Netherton

William Michael Netherton, 74, of Bassett, VA passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. He was born on October 9, 1951, in Washington D.C. to Lester and Patricia Sommer Netherton. He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Robert Netherton.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gilda Cannady Netherton; son, John Michael Netherton (Linnet) of Hillsborough, NC; daughter, Catherine Sommer Netherton (Teddy) of Collinsville, VA; grandchildren, William Gray Netherton, Michael Dean Netherton, and Reece Avery Moran; sisters, Leslie Netherton of Mt. Airy, Maryland and Cely Martin (Frank) of Catlett, VA; step-father, Randy Flanary of Florida; step-mother, Nancy Netherton of Waynesboro, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

Michael was a family man, and he loved kids; his own and many that always found their way to his side. He served in various capacities in Boy Scouts for years mentoring a multitude of young men. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent countless happy hours hunting and fishing. Michael was also an artistic soul, and he loved to create things; music, knives, and solutions to physical problems with whatever was available.

The Netherton family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the love and support provided by Michael’s caregivers Rhonda Hatchett, Hattie Kellum, Claudine Manns, Helen Gilbert, Deborah Heath, and Tanisa Turner. And a special thank you to Susan Warren and Tackfully Teamed for the years patient therapeutic support during Michael’s long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A memorial service will be held February 9, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel. The visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Lee Ashley will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tackfully Teamed Riding Academy, 7975 Henry Rd., Henry VA 24102.
