Kathy Hudson Handy

Kathy Hudson Handy, 63, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 15, 1962, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late William “W.D.” Hudson and Doris Adams Hudson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 28 years, Wayne Handy.

Kathy faithfully served her community throughout her life. She retired from the Henry County Public School Board Office after 33 years of dedicated service, where she worked in several capacities. She also served her community as a member of the Bassett Rescue Squad, worked as an EMT with Stuart Hospital, and spent time assisting in the library at Bassett High School.

For more than 30 years, Kathy was a devoted and valued member of the Bassett Funeral Service staff, where she faithfully served in many roles, including office administration, removals, visitations, and funeral services. Her willingness to answer after-hours calls and her compassionate care for the families she served reflected her deep commitment to helping others during their most difficult moments.

In her spare time, Kathy enjoyed sewing, crafting, and most of all caring for her family and those she loved.

She leaves to cherish her memory her two brothers, Michael W. Hudson (Tina) and Tommy D. Hudson; one sister, Connie H. Bray (Jimmy); three nephews, Zachary Hudson (Erin), John Allen Trent (Rebecca), and Tyler Bray; two nieces, Michelle Hudson and Emily Bray; her brother- and sister-in-law, John and Betty Lou Wasoski; her special extended family, Daryl B. Martin and Paul T. Kennedy, Jr.; and many other relatives and friends.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Carilion Home Healthcare, especially her nurse, Krista Robertson, for their compassionate care.
