Phyliss Mitchem Stone

Phyliss Mitchem Stone, 74, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Sovah Health of Martinsville. She was born on February 1, 1952, in McDowell County, West Virginia, to the late Simon Mitchem and Goldie M. Mitchem. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bobby Mitchem and Jerry Mitchem; and her sisters, Irene Spencer, Hazel Barlow, and Bobbie Mullis.

Phyliss enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. She loved fishing, boating, and swimming and served as a lifeguard for several years at the Bassett Recreational Community Center. Music was another passion of hers — she often played guitar and sang, bringing joy to those around her. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 24 years, Dwayne Stone; two children, Allen Ashworth (Kristen) and Joseph Ashworth (Rebecca); two grandchildren, Christian Ashworth and Emily Ashworth; her twin brother, Phillip Mitchem; her brother, James Church (Neva); her sister, Paula Greer; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
