Velma Chaney Cassell

Velma Chaney Cassell, 91, of Fieldale, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 19, 2026. She was born on August 10, 1934, in Patrick County, Virginia, to the late Fred Lee Chaney and Bertha Craig Chaney.  In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband, Troy W. Cassell; her siblings, Clarence Chaney, Junior Chaney, Vivian C. Cassell, Viola C. Crews, Donald Chaney, and infant brother she called “Craig”.  

Velma was a faithful member of Valley Drive Baptist Church. She lived a devoted life, known especially for her dedication to her family and her strong Christian faith. A homemaker for many years, she took great pride in caring for her home and those she loved.

Velma leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Vickie C. Riddle (Randy); her sons, Gary W. Cassell (Kim) and Phillip D. Cassell;  five grandchildren, Lynsey R. Damiano, Leslee R. Brown, Kori B. Cassell, Dylan J. Cassell, and Cassi C. Hines; great-grandchildren, Thomas Damiano, Claudia Damiano, and Dax Franz; her brothers, Hersel “Gene” Chaney, Troy Chaney, Virginia C. Prater, Barbara C. Frost, and Herbert Chaney; and numerous nieces and nephews.  

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel at 2:00pm with Pastor Bobby Rakes officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Interment will follow at Old Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
