Sylvia Mae Smith Mason

SYLVIA MAE SMITH MASON, 88, of Bastian, VA, went home to be with the Lord she faithfully served on Friday, February 20, 2026. She was born April 24, 1937 in Matoaka, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Fred & Nellie Cecil Smith.

Sylvia loved the Lord with all her heart and loved going to church. She attended Bastian Union Church where she was celebrated as a “Senior Saint.”  She was a devoted prayer warrior.

She loved to play guitar and sing at church. She was an avid Hallmark Channel movie fan.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Woodrow & Nellie Margie Cecil Smith and her husband of almost 50 years, Joseph Ervin Mason, Sr.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter & favorite son-in-law, Debbie & Rick Hull; her sons & daughters-in-law, Joseph, Jr. & Rosemary Mason, Stephen, Sr. & Sandee Mason and Mark & Rhonda Mason; her grandchildren, Seth Hull, Jared Hull, Wesley Mason, Jeremy Mason, Brian Humphreys, Brianna Humphreys, Stephen Mason, Jr., and Justin Mason; her 6 great-grandchildren and 1great-great-granddaughter; her sisters, Carole Fanning, Alice Saunders and Joan Graham; her caregiver, Kathy Wright; special friends, Tyler, Brittany, Stella and Ava Sarver, Crockett & Kelli Sarver; Debby Harmon and Larissa Akers; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. at Bastian Union Church with Pastor Barry Busby officiating.  The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 A.M. until service time, 1:00 P.M.

Burial will follow in the Saint James Lutheran Church Cemetery, 538 St James Rd, Chilhowie, VA 24319. We will meet at the cemetery at 4:00 P.M.
