Betty Lou Turner Lavinder

Betty Lou Turner Lavinder, 87, of Collinsville, VA passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026. She was born on September 20, 1938, in Fieldale, VA to the late Fred Layman Turner and Odessa Frith Turner. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Samuel Sidney Lavinder, her son Sidney Page Lavinder, and brothers Fred Turner and Bobby Turner. Mrs. Lavinder was a graduate of Fieldale High School and Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she received her nursing degree. She served the community as a registered nurse for ten years before staying home full time to raise her three sons. 

Mrs. Lavinder was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Collinsville where she sang in the choir and served in various roles and positions through the years. Her eyes were gifted to see beauty everywhere she looked and she enjoyed various ways of making life joyful for others. She was passionate about music, birds, flowers, painting, cooking, baking, and curating thoughtful shoeboxes each year for Samaritan’s Purse. Betty Lou was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend and she leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and positive perspective to all who knew her. 

Betty is survived by her sons, Brent Lavinder (Kathy) and Drew Lavinder (Maria); grandchildren Claudia Paige Lavinder and Samuel Drew Lavinder; sister, Sandra Stultz; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Turner. 

The Lavinder family celebrates Betty’s long life of faithful love and devotion and are comforted to know that she is in Heaven with her Savior. 

Betty’s celebration of life will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 1:00 P.M at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville, Virginia, with Pastor Larry Cheek officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. 

Mrs. Betty Lou Lavinder will be laid to rest next to her beloved Sidney at Roselawn Memorial Park. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or in the spirit of spending quality time with your loved ones.
