Walter James Mooney
Walter James Mooney III, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 16th, surrounded by his loving family.Born on August 20th, 1947, in Loudonville, New York, Walter lived a full and vibrant life marked by hard work, passion, and deep connections with those he loved. As a young man, he was an active member of his high school swim team, where he developed a strong sense of discipline and camaraderie. He later pursued higher education at the University of South Carolina.Walter had a love for adventure and the outdoors. He earned his pilot’s license and found joy in flying, as well as boating on Lake George, NY and deep sea fishing during his time in Florida. He cherished family traditions, especially spending time at the Saratoga racetrack with loved ones.In pursuit of opportunity, Walter relocated to Mount Airy, North Carolina, where he played a key role in expanding the family business, Oakdale Boston Knitting Company. Following his time there, he demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit by founding a medical sock company, Dr. Socks, which he led until his retirement.Outside of his professional life, Walter had many passions. He was a strong supporter of Surry Animal Rescue, which was founded by his wife, Linda, and a cause that remained close to his heart. He also enjoyed building detailed models and had a lifelong fascination with trains. Above all, he treasured time spent traveling to the beach, gathering with family and friends, and caring for his beloved pets. Walter especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, creating lasting memories with them.Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter James Mooney Jr. and Dolores Mooney; his sister, Barbara Deuel; and his brother, James Mooney.He is survived by his loving wife, Linda; his son, Walter; his daughter-in-law, Scarlett; and his two cherished grandchildren, Ryan and Sean.Walter will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, entrepreneurial drive, and unwavering love for his family.
