Livie Thompson
February 11, 1931 - March 26, 2026
Livie Thompson passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She now rests in the presence of her Lord and is reunited with her beloved husband, Merlin E. Thompson.
She was born on February 11, 1931, to Moses and Lottie Attaway Blackwell, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Clyde Blackwell and Annabelle Austin. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Davis.
Livie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was centered around her family. She shared 71 years of marriage with her husband, Merlin, building a life rooted in love, faith, and unwavering commitment.
She is survived by her children: Janice Shortt (Michael), Joyce Midkiff (Ronnie), and Sherrell Thompson (Sheila); her grandchildren: Ashlee Weeks (John), Ryan Shortt (Hope), and Christopher Thompson (Jessica); and her great-grandchildren: Peyton and Grayson Weeks; Braylee and Austin Shortt; and Case, Craig, and Johannah Thompson; and her sister-in-law, Judy Blackwell.
Raised with a strong work ethic, Livie grew up farming and growing vegetables. She carried that life with her into marriage as a farmer’s wife and dedicated many years to working in the school system as a cafeteria worker. Her love for her family was evident in everything she did—from cooking and canning to tending her flowers and watching birds. She created a home that was filled with love and family and was always welcoming.
A faithful member of Head of the River Primitive Baptist Church, Livie’s life reflected her deep love for the Lord. Her faith guided her and was evident in the way she loved and served others.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Carla Peters, Kim Lovern, Amy Jo Huff, and Lois Hubbard for their compassionate care and devotion, and to Adrian Farley and the entire Good Samaritan Hospice team for their attentive care, support, and guidance. They are also deeply thankful for the many friends and neighbors whose kindness and friendship were a lasting source of comfort throughout her life and during this journey.
Services will be held at Gardner Funeral Home on Sunday, March 29, with visitation from 1:00–3:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 3:00 p.m., officiated by John Weeks. Burial will be at Restvale Cemetery in Copper Hill, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice.
