Ruby Hudson Cash

February 17, 1931 - April 1, 2026

We are heartbroken to announce that our loving mom, Ruby Hudson Cash, 95, of Amherst, Virginia passed peacefully at her home on April 1, 2026.

Ruby, the daughter of the late Annie Davis Hudson and David Seay Hudson, Sr. was born in Amherst County in 1931. She graduated, Salutatorian, from Madison Heights High School in 1949. She then attended Phillips Business College in Lynchburg and was employed by Craddock Terry Corporation.

She was a devoted and loving wife to her husband, the late Jasper Cary Cash (J.C.) of Amherst for 68 years, but she would tell anyone that her greatest achievement was the birth of their two daughters, Katherine Cash Pelletier and Sharon “Kay” Cash. She loved being a stay-at-home mom while they were in school. She was involved in everything from PTA, Brownies, field trips, football games, plays, concerts – every moment that mattered to the girls.

In 1971, she accepted a part-time secretarial position in the office of President Harold Whiteman at Sweet Briar College. That quickly turned into 25 full-time years. She loved the beautiful campus, students, faculty and many friendships she made. During this time, she would volunteer to teach young adults courses to get their G.E.D. Ruby was always interested in learning. She took ballroom dancing, square dancing, floral arranging and gardening. She loved watching her birds and often had species rarely seen in our area visit. She loved giving and receiving cards. Family vacations were cherished, but one of her favorites was North Myrtle Beach. After retirement, you might often see her at “The Drowsy Poet” on Candlers Station. It had been open for 2 years and she had already become close with three different owners. The students who visited The Drowsy Poet loved Mrs. Ruby, and she had kept in touch with many, even today.

Last but not least, Ruby loved having the honor of being “Granny Ruby” to the beautiful Georgianna Trent, and she looked forward to their playdates, lunches and she was so happy to know that she turned 17 this year in March.

Ruby was a beautiful person, inside and out and will be greatly missed by anyone who knew her, but mostly by her daughter Kathy and her son-in-law, Ron, who she adored and had wrapped around her little finger. His love for her deepened when they moved in with her to be caregivers. Ruby is also survived by a step-granddaughter, Melissa April Pelletier.

Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jasper Cary Cash; her daughter Sharon “kay” Cash; three brothers, Malcolm M. Hudson, David S. Hudson, Jr. and Preston A. Hudson; two sisters, Doris Hudson Mays (Larry) and Margaret Hudson Tweedy (Ben).

A funeral celebrating Ruby’s life will be held at Whitten Monelison Chapel on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jeffrey Campbell officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
