Robert Clinton Hemmings

Robert Clinton Hemmings passed away on April 4, 2026, following a brief Hospice stay at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. He was ninety-four years old and had lived a full life. He was the oldest and last surviving son born to the late Daniel Webster Hemmings and Alma Woodruff Hemmings. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of over seventy-five years, Betty Lou Fowler Hemmings; as well as his five brothers, David Hemmings, Cleve Hemmings, Jim Dan Hemmings, Max Woodruff, and Ambrose Woodruff; and five sisters, Violet H. Llewllyn, Loree H. Southard, Myrtle H. Stewart, Lucille H. Rosendahl, and Bertha Jewell McLean.He is survived by his children; Bob (Joy) Hemmings, Luanne (Mike) Marshall, and Tom (Kathy) Hemmings. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren; Dan (Abby) Hemmings, Anna (Chuck)Eyler, Sam (Morgan) Marshall, and Kelly (Seth) Brown. His great grandchildren are Webster Hemmings, Fletcher Hemmings, Knox Hemmings, William Eyler, Lucy Eyler, Charley Marshall, and Avery Browen. Other special relatives includes sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces.Mr. Hemmings was a member of Dobson First Baptist Church. After serving is the United States Army, he began his working career at H&L Equipment Company. Soon after, he and his brother Cleve started an excavating company-Hemmings Brothers. Then, in the early 1970’s, the brothers built and operated Surry Rest Home (now Dunmore Plantation in Dobson) until their retirement. He enjoyed working and had a talent for taking on any task, great or small, everything from making machine parts for bulldozers to repairing broken eyeglasses. And all his life, he was a “trader”. He enjoyed “the hunt” for all things that interested him and could be found at antique shops, flea markets etc. He even owned his own shop-R.C.’s Trading Post for several years. For all who knew and/or loved him, they might say they never knew anyone quite like him. We will surely miss him.Visitation will be Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 11:30 AM-12:45 PM, in the Sanctuary of Dobson First Baptist Church. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 PM, in the Dobson City Cemetery, with Pastor Cory Honeycutt officiating.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Dobson First Baptist Church, or the charity of the donor’s choice. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to special caregiver, April Morgan (Susie Speas and Susan Hinson), as well as the caring staff at Central Continuing Care. We will not forget your many acts of kindness and extra efforts on behalf of our father. Moody-Davis Funeral Service in Dobson is serving the Hemmings family.
