Irene Turman Reed
Irene Turman Reed, 95, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 15, 1930, in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, the third youngest of nine children. Raised in a humble home, she learned the value of hard work at an early age—lessons that stayed with her throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Robert L. Reed; her parents, Samuel and Valeria Rorrer Turman; her brothers, Darcy Turman, Iverne Turman, and Clyde Turman; and her sisters, Avis T. Light, Agnes T. Corso, Ruby T. Willard, and Ardith T. Jackson.
After graduating from high school, she left home and began working at J.C. Penney in Martinsville. There she met the love of her life. They shared 53½ wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2002. She was a charter member of Friendly Christian Church in Martinsville and found great joy in fellowship and community. An avid card player, she participated in several card groups over the years, especially enjoying games of Rook and Hand and Foot.
She had many passions, including collecting dolls—a lifelong hobby that grew into a cherished collection of hundreds—as well as coin collecting. She treasured time spent with her family, especially on vacations to Myrtle Beach. A devoted mother, she lovingly raised four children in the Spencer community. She worked in retail for many years and was known for her strong work ethic. She had a special talent for sewing and crocheting. The bedspreads and intricate tablecloths are treasured heirlooms. She also enjoyed working outdoors including growing a garden and canning vegetables and took pride in caring for her yard.
Above all, she had a caregiver’s heart. After the children were grown, she became a CNA and cared for many people in the area. She was a loving grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was deeply loved by all who knew her and will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and generous spirit.
She is survived by her four children, Donna Rakes (Freddy), Valerie Haynes (Tim), Robert L. Reed, Jr. (Kathy) and Norman E. Reed; sister, Mildred T. Goode; grandchildren, Oliva, Renee, Garrett, Angela, Robert, Heather, Hailey, Cameron, and Brandon; Great-grandchildren, Alexis, Brianna, Abby, Christian, Taylor, Caleb, Indie, Ivy, Isla, Reed, Austin and Sawyer; and three great-great-grandchildren, Princeton, Noah, and Easton.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Friendly Christian Church.
