Mary Katherine Rea

Mary Katherine Rea, 74, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on April 3, 2026.

She was born on January 17, 1952, to the late Lewis Mannon and Sadie E. Biggs Mannon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Billy Wood, and her grandson, Douglas Owens.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Jimmy Rea; her children, Ronnie Owens (Jessica) and Stacey Owens (Jennifer); her brothers, Harvey Shrewsberry, Keith Shrewsberry, Raymond Shrewsberry, Bobby Shrewsberry, and Charles Shrewsberry; and her sisters, Dorothy Shrewsberry and Betty Shrewsberry.

She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Jessica Purdy (Justin), Brittany Clifton (Andrew), Tyler Presnell (Abi), Christian Owens (Bre), Marcus Vernon, Nick Owens, Cheyenne Owens, and Hanna Owens, whom she lovingly called “Sunshine.” Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Brian Purdy, Christine Purdy, Andrew, Malachi, Trinity, Clifton, and Kenlee Presnell.

Mary was a devoted member of Gospel Baptist Church in Bassett, Virginia, and held a deep love for the Lord. She found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially spending time outdoors gardening her flowers and tending to her yard. She had a special love for animals, caring for goats, chickens, ducks, and especially her beloved dogs.

She was known for her warm and giving spirit, always finding ways to serve others and bring happiness to those around her. Mary was also very creative and enjoyed crocheting, even making clothes for her grandchildren. She loved baking, with her no-bake cookies being a favorite among family and friends. Strong-willed and determined, she remained deeply devoted to her family throughout her life.

A graveside service will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Spencer, Virginia, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Todd Barnes officiating.

Mary will be remembered for her unwavering love, kindness, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.

A special thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice. Even though the time with them was short the family appreciates the compassion shown. A special thank you to nurse Dessie and Amie for ensuring Mary was home with her family and animals. The family is thankful for keeping her comfortable until God called her home.
