Early in his career, John worked as a skilled metal worker with O’Neil Steel and BMG Metals. He later became the proud owner and driving instructor of Mann’s Driving School, where he impacted the lives of countless young drivers with patience, wisdom, and a genuine care for their safety and success.
John’s life was marked by a deep and abiding commitment to his community. A passionate sports enthusiast and devoted UVA fan, he gave generously of his time to mentor and encourage young people. He coached Dixie Youth Girls Softball, youth basketball, and served as the former girls basketball coach at Amherst County High School. He also served as an umpire for Madison Heights Dixie Youth Baseball, always striving to teach not only the rules of the game, but also the values of teamwork, respect, and perseverance.
His dedication to service extended beyond the field. John faithfully served on the Board for the Amherst County Parks and Recreation Department, helping to shape programs and opportunities for families throughout the community. He was also an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Neighbors Helping Neighbors, quietly meeting needs and offering kindness wherever it was needed most.
A longtime and devoted member of Madison Heights Baptist Church, John served on the Board of Deacons and lived out his faith through service, compassion, and fellowship. Above all, he was a loving father and grandfather who treasured time spent with his family and took great pride in their lives and accomplishments.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the doctors, nurses and staff at Lynchburg General Hospital for the excellent care they provided.
A memorial service celebrating his life and faith will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Madison Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Josh Beeler officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
