Shirley Epperly
Shirley Ann Sisson Epperly, 91, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 20, 2026, joining her late husband, Theodore "Teddy" Epperly, to whom she was happily married for 63 years. Mrs. Epperly was born November 26, 1934, in Detroit, Mich., a daughter of the late Sherman Ralph Sisson and Georgia Mae James Sisson. She retired from Carter Machinery, where she worked as an executive assistant for 31 years. Shirley also devoted years of service to Salem Church of Christ, teaching children, singing in the choir, taking food and joy to those shut in or sick, greeting everyone on Sunday mornings and always giving of herself in any way she could to benefit others. Her hobbies included antiquing with Teddy, especially Coca Cola memorabilia, and making her famous homemade fudge, vinegar pies and coconut cake for family and friends. She enjoyed her morning cup of coffee, sightseeing, working jigsaw puzzles, visiting with friends and family and eating out to treat others. Miss Shirley leaves a legacy of love and devotion to her Lord, Jesus Christ, her cherished family and friends. She was a stranger to no one and loved to share her faith with whomever her path crossed with. Mrs. Epperly is survived by her daughter, Gayle Ferguson and husband, Bill; son, Terry Epperly and wife, Rowena; brother, Dick Sisson and wife, Colleen; sisters, Pat Williford and Sharon West and husband, John; grandchildren, Jennifer Alleven and husband, Derrick, Zachary Trolier, Justin Epperly and wife, Diana, and Natalie Trolier; and great-grandchildren, Lucy Alleven, Georgia Alleven, and Harper Jones. Shirley was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2026, in the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home with Minister Mike Flinchum officiating. Interment immediately following in East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Salem Church of Christ Thailand Mission. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful caregivers who cared for Miss Shirley: Lauren, Bobbie Jo, Jessica, and Tammy.
