Murel Winona Harmon Suggs

- April 21, 2026

Murel Winona Harmon Suggs, 88, entered her rest on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at her home in Glenvar. She was born in Carroll County on June 26, 1937, to Guy and Eula Winesett Harmon. She was a beloved mother who loved the Lord, loved reading the Bible, and loved Gospel music. She was a member of Living Well Church of the Nazarene in recent years and a long-time member of Fort Lewis Baptist Church for decades before. She loved seeing her brothers and sisters in Christ every Sunday. She was an industrious person all her life. She was always busy doing something or planning the next thing she wanted to do. She thoroughly enjoyed vegetable gardening. Harvesting the produce, especially her favorite beans and tomatoes, was a special joy for her, and she enjoyed all the work involved with preparing, storing, and cooking the harvest. She had a special passion for baking, and she won fans for her sweet potato casserole and tomato pie. She continuously searched out new recipes to try. She particularly loved baking sweets and prepared many wonderful batches of cookies, muffins, brownies, and bars. She enjoyed her career with the railroad and treasured the friends she made during her working years. She retired from Norfolk Southern after 44 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Daniel N. Suggs; brothers and sisters, Gaynell Harmon, Stanley Harmon, Adrena Harmon Palmer, Henry Ralph Harmon, and Fern Harmon Hughes. Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Suggs of Salem; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Joyce Harmon of Austinville; cousin, Mary Reaser of Salem; and several nieces and nephews. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the prayer warriors lifting up Murel and Jennifer during the past months, to the Living Well Church family for their support, to the Roanoke Memorial Hospital doctors, nurses, and neurology team who sought answers and compassionately cared for Murel during her hospitalizations, and to the people of Good Samaritan Hospice for their help and support during Murel’s final days. Her family will receive friends on Monday, April 27, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, followed by a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Pastor Steve Parker officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to be in the procession line up by 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Living Well Church, God’s Pit Crew, or Good Samaritan Hospice.
