Virginia Ray Fitzgerald Wilkerson

October 19, 1949 - April 23, 2026

Virginia Ray Hall Fitzgerald Wilkerson, 76, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Born in Lynchburg on October 19, 1949, she was the daughter of Evelyn Banton Hall and the late John Raymond Hall, Sr. Virginia was also preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Wayne Fitzgerald, Sr., and her brother, Johnny Hall, Jr.

She is survived by her devoted son, Jerry Wayne “Winky” Fitzgerald, Jr., and his wife, Tracy, who was like a daughter to her, as well as Tracy’s mother, Betty. She also leaves behind her beloved “Angel,” Lyle Thomas Franklin, whose care and loyalty meant so much to her. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Eve Rynard—“Sarge”—for the extraordinary compassion and sacrifice shown in ensuring Virginia’s comfort and peace in her final days.

In addition to her mother, Virginia is survived by her sisters and their families: Ada Young, who was very devoted to Virginia and her children, Tommy “T” and Tiffany; Barbara Cyrus, her daughters Tammy, Tammy’s husband Johnny, and Tina and her husband William their son Zack; Brenda Melton and her husband Gary and their son Duke; and Linda Chalfin and her husband Bruce and their children, Brenda, Bubba, and Coty. She is also fondly remembered by the Gowen family, who were a cherished part of her life: Mary Miller (Jimmy), Jean Wariner, Wanda Ferguson, Angela Tanner, Johnny Gowen, Jr. and Tracy Gowen, and also Darlene Harris, and Jean Tyree. Additionally, she is survived by her bonus nieces and nephews from her late husband’s family, Deborah Harris and husband Johnny and Renae Barbour and husband Larry.

The family extends sincere appreciation to the doctors at UVA Cancer Center for their dedicated care and efforts throughout her illness. Special thanks are also given to the staff at Liberty Ridge, especially Rebecca Dodson, who shared a special bond with Virginia and provided exceptional kindness and support, and the nurses and staff of Gentle Shepherd Hospice for the excellent care they provided.

Virginia fought a courageous 15-month battle with illness. Her strength, love, and resilience will be remembered by all who knew her. Now, she rests in peace.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Monday, April 27, 2026 Jonesboro Baptist Church Cemetery.
