Jean Marie Mattera
November 18, 1963 — April 21, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved family member, Jean Mattera, on Tuesday 21, 2026, at the age of 62.

Jean was born in Calvert County, Maryland, on November 18, 1963, and moved to Roanoke in 1972. She graduated from Cave Spring High School in 1983. For many years, she enjoyed working at Goodwill Industries, where she made lifelong friends. While she was disabled and had many health challenges, she led a very active and independent life. She knew all the city bus routes and would visit and go shopping with her best friend. Jean was always happy and a friend to anyone she met.

One of her greatest joys was participating in Roanoke County’s Therapeutic Recreation Program. She loved the crafts, cooking, bowling, trips, and especially going out to eat. With her family, she enjoyed participating in holiday dinners and spending time at Smith Mountain Lake. Jean was a pet lover throughout her life and contributed to animal rescues.

Jean was preceded in death by her father, Harding, and mother, Mary Pell Mattera; stepmother, Louise Finney Mattera; brother, John Mattera; sister, Bonnie White; and nephew, Billy White.

She is survived by her brothers Mike and Moe Mattera; nephews Wesley, Brian, and Antony Mattera; nieces, Susan White and Merry Trevino; stepbrothers, David and Mike Finney, and his wife, Mary, and their children, Scott, Tyler, Matt, and Anne; step-sister, Susan Tate, and her husband Mike, and their children, Sarah and Katie.

The family invites friends to a visitation at 12:00 pm Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA.

A service will be held immediately following the event, accompanied by a committal service at Evergreen Burial Park.
