Harold Daniel Hankins

February 20, 1928 - May 11, 2026

Harold Daniel Hankins was born February 20, 1928 in Mt. Airy, Virginia. He was a long time resident of Blacksburg. He also lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, Lakeland, Florida, and most recently, Lynchburg, VA since 2013. Harold was the fifth of ten children. His humble beginnings and his father and mother helped him learn the value of hard work. With his father’s occupation, the family moved frequently, and they were sure to attend church wherever they moved. Harold is preceded in death by his wife, June Morton Hankins. They were married over 63 years and had three children, Janet Jappe [Mark], Lynnette Conder [Steve] and Matthew Hankins [Rhonda]. Harold’s extended family includes ten grandchildren: Jonathan Jappe [Emily], Caleb Jappe [Kayleigh], Rachel Webb [Daniel], Jason Conder [Charlotte], Briley Lemon [Jacob], Daniel Hankins [Alli], Joshua Hankins [Kelsey], Anna Hankins, Timothy Hankins and Sarah Hankins. His sixteen great-grandchildren are Isaac Jappe, Abigail Jappe, Elizabeth Jappe, Benjamin Jappe, Violet Jappe, Ivy Jappe, Marigold Jappe, Judah Webb, Sophia Webb, Charlotte Webb, Thomas Conder, Lucas Conder, Sunflower Lemon, Elaine Hankins, Judah Hankins and Eden Hankins. Harold loved Virginia Tech and the town of Blacksburg. He graduated from VPI in 1957 with a B.S. in Industrial Arts Education and began his career in the early days of Poly-Scientific, eventually moving on to become President and General Manager of Electro-Tec Corp. These two companies are now part of MOOG, Inc. When Harold retired in 1992, he and June enjoyed traveling the USA in their motorhome. When their traveling days were over they moved to the Westminster Canterbury Community in Lynchburg where June passed away in 2014. Harold’s life was enriched again when he met and married Carol Coulter. They enjoyed many years together. Carol was and is a blessing. Harold loved to sing for the residents of Westminster Canterbury where he became known as The Singer. It brings us joy to think his voice has now been added to the heavenly choir that worships the Lord Jesus Christ. Blacksburg Christian Fellowship, 2300 North Main Street in Blacksburg, will host the visitation at 12:00 noon on Monday, May 18th followed by the memorial service at 1:00PM. In lieu of flowers, one of Harold’s favorite charities was God’s Pit Crew. They are a faith based, non-profit disaster response team of volunteers serving others in their times of need.
