Barbara Eden Dalton
Barbara Eden Dalton, 85, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Born on August 29, 1940, in West Virginia, Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late William Eden and Vada Eden. A proud coal miner’s daughter, she carried her West Virginia roots with her throughout her life. She spent 54 cherished years in Bassett, Virginia, where she built a life filled with family, friendship, faith, and community in Hillcrest Park. In 2019, she moved to Greensboro to be closer to her daughter.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Earl Dalton. He was the love of her life, and they met while attending National Business College, beginning a marriage and partnership built on devotion and lasting memories that spanned 52 years. Together, they created a home where everyone felt welcomed, loved, and well fed.
Known affectionately as “Mama D” to countless friends of her children, Barbara had a gift for making people feel like family. The friendships she formed lasted decades, a testament to the loyalty, warmth, and love she poured into others throughout her life. Her love language was sharing food, whether through homemade goodies, favorite recipes, or cooking advice passed along with care and laughter. Her kitchen was a gathering place, and feeding others was one of the many ways she showed love.
Barbara’s greatest joy in life was being a mother and grandmother. She adored her grandchildren and embraced every opportunity to make memories with them. Adventurous and spirited, she was always ready for fun, even zip-lining through the mountains to celebrate her 80th birthday. She loved traveling, especially trips to the beach and mountains with her daughter. Barbara was a longtime member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Ridgeway, Virginia, and retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after many years of service.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Dalton of Annapolis, Maryland; her daughter, Sharon Dalton of Greensboro, North Carolina; and her beloved grandchildren, Sean Dalton (Donna), Austin Dalton, River Dalton, and Tanner Dalton. She also leaves behind her cherished granddog, Vada. She is also survived by her brother, Gerald Eden (Alma Lee); nieces, Lynne Siemon (Glenn) and Kim Burton; as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will miss her dearly.
Barbara will be remembered for her generous heart, adventurous spirit, unwavering love for family, and the countless lives she touched with kindness, laughter, and friendship. Her legacy lives on in the many people fortunate enough to have called her family, friend, neighbor, or simply “Mama D.”
She will be celebrated in a private graveside service officiated by Pastor Doug Ramsey.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Barbara’s memory to AuthoraCare Collective’s Beacon Place in Greensboro, North Carolina, (Greater Greensboro) or to a hospice organization that holds special meaning to the donor.
