David C. Almond

July 3, 1941 - May 16, 2026

David Clarke Almond, 84, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and the many memories he created throughout a remarkable life.
David was born on July 3, 1941, in Appomattox, Virginia. He lived a life defined by hard work, intelligence, adventure, loyalty, and deep devotion to those he loved.
A proud graduate of Lynchburg College, David earned his undergraduate degree in 1966 and went on to become the first graduate of Lynchburg College’s Master’s program, earning his Masters of Business Administration in 1972. His education helped lay the foundation for a long and distinguished career in the nuclear power industry.
David began his career with Babcock & Wilcox and went on to build an extensive and respected professional career with multiple companies throughout the nuclear industry. David held executive leadership roles at B&W/Framatome, ABB, and Westinghouse, earning the respect of colleagues across the country and around the world. He concluded his career as a consultant for Westinghouse. His work allowed him to travel extensively, an experience he truly enjoyed and embraced with curiosity and enthusiasm, often sharing those travels with his family.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Almond, with whom he shared more than 41 years of marriage, and was a proud father to his three sons, Alex Almond and his wife, Lynette; Jon Almond and his wife, Sarah; and Greg Mayberry and his wife, Nikki. His family was the center of his world, and he took immense pride in their lives and accomplishments. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother, Kyle Almond and his wife, Lynn; and his special friend, Reggie Pugh.
David was preceded in death by his parents, David Wilson Almond and Evelyn Stewart Almond; his sister, Barbara Shelton; and his brother-in-law, Earl Shelton.
David was also a longtime member of Rocks Baptist Church in Pamplin, Virginia, where he valued the fellowship and community he found there.
Outside of his career, David had a great love for sports, especially Virginia Tech Hokies football, Liberty Flames football and basketball, and Lynchburg College basketball. He rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his beloved Hokies and was a proud donor to the Virginia Tech Hokie Club, as well as a season ticket holder for more than 50 years. He was also a donor to the Flames Club at Liberty University. David also loved old westerns, especially Gunsmoke. He had a special bond with his German Shepherd dogs throughout his life, especially his beloved Helga, his loyal sidekick and riding partner. David loved simply taking Helga for rides in the van, often with no particular destination in mind.
David enjoyed traveling, exercising, staying active, and sharing his sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor with family and friends. He will be remembered as a warm, loving, intelligent, and generous man whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to those around him.
His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering love for his family and friends will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. David leaves behind a legacy of strength, compassion, dedication, and love that will never be forgotten.
The family will hold a memorial service at Robinson Funeral Home in Appomattox on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors at Robinson Funeral Home immediately following the service. Due to Helga’s very protective nature, the family sincerely asks that no visitors come to the family home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in David’s honor to a charitable organization that is meaningful to you. David was generous beyond measure throughout his life, giving to more charities and causes than his family could ever count. He often said that God had blessed him beyond belief, and he believed it was his duty to bless others in whatever way he could. His spirit of generosity was one of the many ways he quietly and faithfully cared for the world around him.
