Betty Ballantine Crawford

April 21, 1937–June 2, 2026

Born in Bakersfield, California in 1937, Betty moved to Roanoke at the age of 10, where she would plant deep roots and build a life centered on love and devotion to her family. She graduated from the original William Fleming High School in 1955 and, two years later, married the love of her life, Ronald Crawford.

Betty’s life was one of quiet strength and unwavering support. With humor and humility, Virginia Tech awarded her the honorary degree of “PHTS” (Putting Hubbie Through School), a fitting tribute to the sacrifices she made so that those she loved could thrive. As the daughter of a hardworking single mother, Betty was determined to be present, at home, for her own children, dedicating herself fully to their upbringing and well-being.

She was deeply involved in her children’s activities—from Brownies and Girl Scouts to Cub Scouts and the PTA—serving as teacher, chauffeur, nurse, encourager, and constant source of support for her children. A faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Betty shared her faith by teaching Sunday School and giving her time generously.

Betty and Ron celebrated 68 years of marriage last year, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Throughout their years together, she stood beside Ron, supporting his career in architecture, entertaining clients, and accompanying him to conferences and tradeshows, always with grace and warmth.

Though she made her home in Virginia, Betty forever carried with her the spirit of a “California girl.” She cherished sunshine and the beach her entire life. She had many happy trips to the Caribbean on cruises, at resorts or private cottages, sometimes with friends or family, and always with Ron. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed decades vacationing together in Kure Beach NC. Her travels took her from the Caribbean to Hawaii, and to Europe, Asia, and South America.

Above all, Betty’s greatest love was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband Ronald O. Crawford; her daughter Cathy L . Crawford (Jim); her son Kenneth N. Crawford (Sharon); and her beloved grandsons, Cade Crawford (Sarah Wade) and Case Crawford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nell M. and Samuel A. Ballantine; her sister, Jean B. Campbell; and her infant son, Mark Steven Crawford.

Betty spent the last weeks at home cared for by her husband, family, and Carilion Clinic Hospice Care.

A memorial service will be officiated by Rev. Kenneth Lane and Rev. Terry Edwards at a time and place to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of her favorite charities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Wounded Warriors.
