Shirley Marlow Elixson
Shirley Marlow Elixson, 79, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 2026. She was born on April 14, 1947, to the late Hassell Gilbert Marlow and Betty Still Marlow. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Charlie Thomas Elixson, Jr. Shirley was married for 60 years and survived by her two children: Steven Elixson (Shannon) and Dawn Reed (Richard). She cherished her seven grandchildren: Magen Turner (Lea), Holley Ciafre (Matthew), Austin Reed (Alexis), Chad Crowley, Jenna Crowley, Autumn Hurley, and Cole Elixson; her five great-grandchildren, Boston and Grayson Turner, Noah Roberts, Kirstin and Kaidan Reed; and her grandchildren brought her such tremendous joy.
Shirley worked as a bookkeeper for Reynolds Tax Service for many years and also Bassett Walker, for Wometco Vending. Shirley was a dedicated member of County Line Christian Church for most of her life. She found immense joy in organizing bus trips, where wonderful friends and family created special bonds. The unforgettable beach trips she planned cultivated friendships that have endured for a lifetime and will continue for future generations. Whether it was a beach getaway or a journey across the states to California, she cherished bringing everyone together. Additionally, her beloved Rook group provided not only a social outlet but also a space to foster a Christian environment where everyone enjoyed gathering, sharing meals, and enjoying fellowship. This was what brought her the greatest happiness.
Shirley grew up on a farm in the small rural community of Callands, Virginia. However, her upbringing on a farm was somewhat ironic, as she was not particularly fond of animals. In fact, she often persuaded her siblings to take over the chicken duties to avoid any contact with any animals. What she truly loved were what we Southerners call “visits.” Her parents, Gilbert and Betty, were always the first to arrive with food and open arms, a tradition Shirley upheld until her final days. She had prepared a large pot of corn and potato soup, and while she could no longer deliver it herself, no one minded stopping by to pick up a bowl for dinner. Shirley was a natural caretaker; from an early age, she welcomed her sister, Cathy, and her special cousin, Donna, into her home, because back in the day, trips to town were once a week. When Shirley and Charlie moved to Danville to work at Dan River, it made sense for Cathy and Donna to stay with them to attend college and be closer to town. Years later, Shirley would care for her Aunt Eva, then her parents, Betty and Gilbert, and later, her cherished nephew, Justin. Being a caretaker was second nature to her, and she approached it with love and grace. Her crown will surely have an extra jewel for the sacrifices and selflessness she demonstrated in caring for them.
Shirley loved her family fiercely. The holidays were always celebrated at Shirley and Charlie's home, welcoming family, siblings along with their families, and anyone else who wanted a seat at the table. She eagerly anticipated the holiday gatherings, with Thanksgiving being her favorite. Shirley adored the beach and enjoyed sitting by the surf. Although she wasn't the "greeter" like her husband Charlie, her quiet presence spoke volumes; everyone knew she was a dependable friend to call upon and her love for her family and friends ran deep. The family would like to extend a special thank you to everyone from the church family and the community that have visited, brought food, the cards, calls, and text. At a time such as this, people come into your lives as you need it most. It will be impossible to list names, as over the past 18 months there have been countless people who have helped. When the family was searching for a sitter, we were blessed to have people we could trust and provide the best care. A
special thank you to Tina Perdue, she came into our lives when we needed her most and she absolutely cared for mama and daddy beyond what we could have asked. Her selflessness does not go unrecognized and we are forever grateful.
A celebration of life will take place at County Line Christian Church in Axton, Virginia on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 12:00 P.M. with Dean Ashby and Tim Maness officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. At other times, the family will be available at the home. Shirley’s legacy is one of love, compassion and dedication to her family and friends, serving food and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Heritage Academy at P. O. Box 397, Chatham, Virginia, 24531 or Cool Branch Volunteer Rescue Squad at 3060 Smith Mountain Road, Penhook.
