Bernard O'Connor

February 4, 1950 - June 21, 2026

Bernard Eugene O'Connor, affectionately known to all who loved him as "Bernie," passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at the age of 76.

Bernard was born on February 4, 1950, in New York City to the late James Bernard "Sonny" O'Connor and Maxine Stewart O'Connor. Growing up in the city, he graduated from PS 117 and went on to work as a skilled craftsman in a local woodworking shop. Though he moved away, he remained in a life-long New Yorker at heart, fiercely cheering on his beloved Bronx Bombers, the Yankees, and the New York Knicks.

In 1981, looking for a quieter, simpler life, Bernie and his family returned to their ancestral roots in Appomattox, Virginia. This move allowed his father, a World War II veteran, to renew the family's ties with the Galilee Baptist Church and the local community. Bernie fully embraced the warmth of small-town life. He found great joy in the simple pleasures: sitting contentedly on the porch, walking into town, attending church, and looking forward to the annual Railroad Festival.

Bernie was a remarkably kind and positive soul, blessed with a keen memory and a sharp intellect. He loved sharing his wealth of knowledge and reminiscing about the past with anyone who sat down to talk with him. When relaxing, he was a dedicated fan of daytime television and listening to records from his childhood. Both brought him daily comfort and amusement.

He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, James and Maxine, as well as his beloved cousin Dianne Scruggs, who faithfully and lovingly cared for him over 30 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his cousins, extended family members, and dear friends and staff at Carriage Hill Retirement.

Like his mother and father before him, Bernie will be remembered by all as a sweet, gentle and loving man.
