Gavin Blake Mitchell
Gavin Blake Mitchell
April 28, 2000 - July 04, 2026
Gavin Blake Mitchell, 26, of Floyd, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, after living with synovial sarcoma since the age of 19.
Born on April 28, 2000, in Radford, Virginia, Gavin graduated from Floyd County High School in 2018 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in literature. He was a scholar at heart, a natural storyteller, and someone who believed knowledge was meant to be shared. He loved teaching others about the things that fascinated him. Whether discussing literature, mythology, history, theatre, his favorite movies and TV series, or the Baltimore Ravens, he welcomed thoughtful debate and the opportunity to explore new ideas. If you were looking for Gavin, chances were you’d find him with a book in one hand, a cup of coffee nearby, ready to ask a question, challenge an idea, or recommend a novel. His dry wit and unintentional humor brought laughter to those around him.
Gavin found joy in traveling with his longtime girlfriend, Rachel Evans, whom he fiercely loved. He also loved running and discovered one of his greatest passions on the stage, bringing memorable characters to life through Floyd County High School and local community theatre productions. Though he faced extraordinary challenges with quiet courage, Gavin never wanted to be defined by his illness, but by the life he lived and the person he was.
Gavin is survived by his loving mother and stepfather, Angel and Andy Wimmer; the love of his life, Rachel Evans; grandparents Mike and Ramona Mitchell and Linda Wimmer; great-grandparents Ron and Ann Ridpath; sisters Layla Donathan, Karli Ramsdell (Nathan), and Kayla Graham (Lucas); many aunts, uncles, cousins, a niece and nephew; and his beloved companion, Harvey Mac “Bubba.”
Like the heroes he admired, Gavin faced impossible trials with extraordinary courage. Near the end of his life, he told his family he was Hercules. It was a fitting comparison. Gavin will be remembered not for the illness he endured, but for his brilliant mind, his curiosity, his quiet strength, his authenticity, and the love he leaves behind.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Gavin’s life during a public visitation on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd, Virginia.
