Robert Luther Rice

Robert “Luther” Rice, 65, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Mabel Daugherty and Musa and Ashby L. Rice; and parents, Kenneth and June Rice.

Luther is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Susan Rice; son, Zachary Rice (Elexus); grandchildren, Emmaleigh, Joseph, Julia, Isabelle, and Parker Ellis; sisters, Karen Rice Lilly and Anita Mattingly (Michael); brother, Kenneth Rice II (Sue Ellen); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Luther served courageously in the United States Army for 8 years. He then served for 16 years as a Letter Carrier for the United States Post Office. He loved football specifically Virginia Tech, The University of Florida, and The Washington Commanders. He cherished time with his family, and found great joy in making memories with his grandchildren which included sharing stories. Luther’s presence brought warmth and happiness to those he loved and will continue to live on in their hearts.

The family will have a Visitation on Monday, July 13, 2026 from 2:00 – 3:00pm at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road Roanoke, VA 24019. A Chapel Service will follow at 3:00pm also at the funeral home and officiated by Jonathan Landis.
