Philip Leighton Knowles

September 20, 1973 - July 11, 2026

Philip Leighton Knowles, 52, of Forest, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 11, 2026, while on vacation in Florida.

Born in Miami, Florida, on September 28, 1973, he was the son of the late Richard Haskell Knowles and Patricia Braddock Knowles.

Philip grew up in Florida before moving to Lynchburg in his younger years. He graduated from Lynchburg Christian Academy in 1992 and proudly served his country in the United States Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following his military service, Philip built a career with Foster Fuels, where he was known for his strong work ethic and friendly nature.

A man centered in his faith, Philip served as a youth pastor in several churches over the years. He had a heart for encouraging others and sharing his faith, leaving a lasting impact on many young lives.

Philip was a devoted fan of the Miami Dolphins and the Florida Gators, but nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his family. He was a loving father and grandfather whose greatest pride was watching his children build lives of their own. His love, encouragement, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Bryce Knowles and his wife, Hannah; three daughters, Cassidy Berthiaume and her husband, Caleb, Summer Burley and her husband, Logan, and Skylar Lemons and her husband, Alex; his cherished grandson, Colvin Knowles and expecting two more grandsons in January; his sister, Abby Owen and her husband, David; as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends.

A Celebration of Philip's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Celebrant Polly Starns officiating. The family request everyone dress casual and in Miami Dolphin or Florida Gator colors (Blue & Orange)

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

Private burial, with military honors, will be held at a later date in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida where his parents are buried.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

Because Philip's death was so sudden, his family finds comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the faith he shared, the country he faithfully served, and, above all, the love he poured into his family. He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and fondly remembered.
