Barbara Ellen Reynolds Pickeral
Barbara Ellen Reynolds Pickeral, born January 8, 1930, passed away peacefully at her home on July 31, 2026 at the age of 96. Barbara was the daughter of the late Mae Lawrence Reynolds and the late Clarence “Doc” Reynolds. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Anderson Pickeral, son of the late Roy Pickeral and Leona Campbell Pickeral.
Barbara was the loving mother of three children; Carolyn Sue Pickeral Doss and husband Reuben Doss, Clifton “Andy” Anderson Pickeral and his wife Ann, and Nancy Jo Pickeral Shumate and husband Harvey. She was a devoted grandmother to Forrest Crider, who preceded her in death; Hannah Crider Stowe and her husband Matt, Chase Shumate and his wife Jodi, Tyler Shumate and his wife Tabitha, Elizabeth Mae Shumate, Ali Pickeral Knick and her husband Justin, and Andrew Doss. She was also blessed with nine great grandchildren; Brayden Crider, Colton Crider, Cameron Crider, Cliff Shumate, Lakely Shumate, Ryder Shumate, Crider Stowe, Sailor Shumate, and Navie Shumate, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, caregivers, extended family members, and friends.
Barbara is also survived by a brother Roscoe Reynolds and his wife Carolyn, and was preceded in death by her other two brothers, Lawrence L. Reynolds and wife Dorothy, and Michael L. Reynolds and wife Daisy.
Mrs. Pickeral devoted many years of life to educating and encouraging children as a teacher with Pittsylvania County Schools. Her influence reached far beyond the classroom and she was well known and deeply respected throughout her community. She was a woman of strong Baptist Faith. Barbara was a devoted member of Liberty Baptist Church, where she played an active role in the life of the church and served on numerous committees throughout the years.
Above all, Barbara loved God and her family. She lived a life of faith, service, kindness, and devotion. Her love for her family was evident in everything she did, and the lessons she taught, both inside and outside the classroom, will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. Barbara will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, church family, former students, friends, and community.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, 18529 Franklin Turnpike, Callands, VA 24530, with Pastor Daryl Joyce officiating. A Visitation will be conducted the night before on Monday, August 3, 2026 from 6-7:30p.m., also at Liberty Baptist Church, Callands, VA. At other times the family will receive friends at family at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Nancy Shumate.
A private interment will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, VA at a later date.
