David Edsel Nedrow

David E. Nedrow, 82, of Roanoke, VA passed away on August 14, 2026. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and his presence will be deeply missed.

David was born at home in the small town of Albright, WV on September 24, 1943 to David and Mary Nedrow. He grew up spending time on his grandmother’s farm and was there the day electricity first came to that part of rural West Virginia. David attended college at WVU where he played goalie for the varsity soccer team and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education. More importantly to him, WVU was where he met his wife, Margaret Spear. They were married in June of 1965 at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and Roanoke became their home as they loved and supported each other through more than 61 years of married life together while raising a family. David began his teaching career as an Industrial Arts teacher at Lord Botetourt High School. In 1972, he joined Roanoke County Schools, as the Guidance Coordinator, progressing to Vice-Principal, and then Principal at Arnold R. Burton Technical High School, while earning his Master’s degree in Education from Virginia Tech. During his almost 40 year career as an educator, David was a guiding and supportive influence on his students and teachers. Countless students were able to pursue their career goals because of his relentless efforts, unwavering support, and belief in their abilities. David constantly saw the fruits of his efforts as he would bump into past students while out in the Roanoke Valley, always taking time to catch up and hear about their lives.

David brought the same devotion and enthusiasm to his family. He was a fun and supportive father, constantly active and present in his children’s lives. During his busy lifetime, David spent several years as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 2, devoting nearly fifteen years as a soccer coach for both of his children, as an active member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church, and later a member of Kiwanis. David always enjoyed spending time outdoors with his family and friends. He was an avid hiker, cyclist, and golfer as well as a passionate lover of bluegrass music and the bluegrass scene of SW Virginia.

David is survived by his wife Margaret; son David; daughter Ellen, son-in-law Wes Sullivan, and grandson Sully; sisters Lois Van Doren and Geniene Zinn and their families; and niece Kerri Montgomery, nephew Ryan Blackwell, and their families.

Visitation will be at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Rd., on Thursday, August 27th 5-8 pm. A memorial service will be held at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, 2330 South Jefferson St., on Friday, August 28th at 2pm with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
