August 15, 1936 - August 19, 2026

Nancy Reid Hairston, 90, of Spencer, Virginia, was called to Heaven on Wednesday August 19, 2026, at Stuart Community Hospital, Stuart Virginia. She was born on August 15, 1936, in Martinsville, Virginia to the late Samuel J. Reid, Sr. and Nancy Jane (Price) Reid.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elder Colonel D. Hairston and her son Victor O. Hairston; four sisters, Marie Edwards, Dorothy Adams, Virginia Edwards and Christine Watkins and three brothers, Philmore Reid, Richard Reid and Samuel J. Reid, Jr.

Nancy was the youngest of her siblings and the last of the Samuel J. and Nancy Reid generation.

She graduated from Patrick Central High School, Class of 1955 with honors; where she later served as a substitute teacher and secretary for the Parent Teacher Association. Later, attended Radford University where she trained to be an assistant for the Head Start Program at Hardin-Reynolds Memorial School. Additionally, she was employed by Bassett-Walker in Stuart, Virginia where she later retired.

A woman of strong Christian faith, she was a faithful member of Red Hollow Primitive Baptist church – baptized in 1957. She served as a Clerk and Church Mother. She also served as clerk for Ridgeway Primitive Baptist Church alongside of her Husband, then Pastor Elder Colonel D. Hairston. She loved her church Brothers and Sisters and praising God for all his goodness. God gave her a testimony – “Nancy, the world has no greater gift to offer you than what I have already given you”. “God is” was a phrase she used daily.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30
