Herbert Duval Wood
Herbert Duval Wood, 97, of Madison Heights went home to his eternal home with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at his home.
Born in Nelson County on July 13, 1929, Herbert was the son of the late Herbert C. (Jack) Wood and Flossie Elizabeth Banton Wood.
In addition to his wife of 69 years, Peggy Moore Wood, he is survived by one daughter Cheryl Wood Hudnall and her husband Roger of Lynchburg; one son, Dwayne Scott Wood and his wife Jennifer of Virginia Beach; one grandson, Samuel Ryan Hudnall and his wife Micaela of Lynchburg; two sisters, Virginia Glover of Glade Spring, and Mary Mitchell of Gladys; a sister-in-law, Anna Wood of Johnson City, TN; a half-brother, William (Billy) Wood of Arrington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Wood; four sisters, Frances Coates, Charlotte Wood, Ollie May Courington, and Marion Wiles; five brothers-in-law William (Bill) Coates, Melton (Tex) Courington, Benjamin Wiles, Percy Glover, and Leslie (Les) Mitchell; a half-brother, Montague Wood; and a half-sister, Jane Williams.
Herbert was an active member of Madison Heights Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and a member of the Building and Grounds Committee. After proudly serving a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, Herbert was employed by George W. Fix in Lynchburg, where he mastered wood-working skills. He used these skills in the millwork shop at Taylor Brothers in Lynchburg, where he was employed until his retirement.
Herbert enjoyed researching and compiling his family genealogy, wood-working, restoring antique furniture and teaching his grandson all about small engines. He was a generous, loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and will be forever missed.
A service celebrating his life and faith will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2026 at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with Rev. Josh Beeler officiating.
