Faye King Grant
Faye King Grant, 81, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2026. She was born on Monday, April 2, 1945, the day after Easter that year. She was the daughter of the late Sterling Fletcher King and Hallie Midkiff King. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Stewart Grant, sister Rebecca Roberts and brothers, S. Frederick (Fred) King, George R. King and William Larry King.
She is survived by her sons, Stewart Douglas Grant and Joseph Sterling Grant; her grandchildren, David McCormick Grant, Jessica Grace Grant, and Spencer Douglas Grant, all of Bedford; three sisters, Julia “Judy" K. Hudgins and husband, Garrett, of Roanoke, Virginia “Jenny" Obenchain and husband, Tommy, of Chesapeake, Va., and Betty Jo Mabe and husband, Rodger, of Roanoke; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Upon graduating from Montvale High School in 1963 where she was an incredible basketball and volleyball player, Faye married her high school sweetheart David, and was a loyal and dedicated wife for over 53 years. As a mother and someone who loved sports very much herself, she immensely enjoyed watching her sons and grandchildren participate in numerous activities when she was physically able. She was also the loudest supporter at those games as well as all of the high school basketball and softball games that David coached. Everyone knew where Faye’s loyalty was, including the referees when calls didn’t go the way she thought they should.
Faye worked in the banking industry for over 35 years, the majority of the time with Bedford Federal. Faye never met a stranger while working and enjoyed getting to know every customer that came into the bank. She loved her coworkers as sisters and brothers and being the social butterfly that she was, she was definitely in her favorite environment being able to talk to people every day and help them with their financial needs. When time allowed, Faye would serve families as hostess at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service. She was also a past member and President of Bedford Business & Professional Women's Organization where she made many close friendships, both locally and statewide.
As a member of Thaxton Baptist Church, she served many roles, including ones as a deacon, Sunday school teacher of preschoolers, choir member, and multiple committees, including finance. At church, she was also well known for her fabulous tasting poundcakes. They would go for a big price at the church auctions because of their popularity among church members.
Later in life, Faye enjoyed having conversations with her sisters at least one a day if not morning and afternoon along with any friends/family that was able to call.
Stewart and Joseph would personally like to thank the following caregivers that went far and above their calling to help Faye during the past six years. These ladies in no particular order are Judy McKinney, Ada Johnson, April Brown, Betty Jones, Brenda Johnson, Althea Blankenship, Carolyn Anderson, Carrie Stevens, Joyce Zdenek, Kimberly Smith and Maria Blavejewicz. The family would also like to thank Miller’s Transportation Services for their assistance the past two years, getting Faye to and from her doctor’s appointments. They provided a much-needed asset and their help that did not go unnoticed.
The biggest thank you from the family goes to Becki Robertson. Her valuable insight, friendship, and help with organizing all of the caregivers, loyalty and comfort to Faye was the biggest asset she could’ve had. No words can express what she did for Faye these past six years and was much appreciated by all.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
