Marshall Stephen Swinney

Marshall Stephen Swinney, 74, of Axton, Virginia, passed away Monday, September 21, 2026. He was born on April 29, 1952, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Robert Jasper Swinney and Carrie “Mommom” Payne Swinney.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Akers, Bonnie Sawyers; and brothers, James Swinney, Charles Swinney, Glen Swinney, Rev. Samuel Swinney, and Noah “Cricket” Swinney.

Marshall was a man of Christian faith; he was a member and deacon of Fair Haven Assembly of God where he loved to play guitar and sing. He also blessed others by sharing his gift of music at Hardee’s and Blue Ridge Nursing Home. Marshall was a talented painter who painted every house on Mulberry Street in Martinsville. In his earlier years, he enjoyed shooting pool so much that he and his son made special memories building their own pool table from scratch. Marshall loved animals to the extent that he declared himself a “self-proclaimed veterinarian,” trying to save as many as possible.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Wanda Sue Swinney; sons, Thomas Stephen Swinney (Brandy), Joseph Marshall Swinney; sister, Maxine Mays (Steve); honorary grandchildren, John Luke “Bubba” and Willow; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

A graveside service will be held Friday, September 25, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Fair Haven Memorial Park with Randy Sawyers officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel.
